Abstract The salt is indispensable for several industrial sectors, and its production is associated with some natural conditions. These conditions result in productive areas often close to the estuary. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the estuaries environmental monitoring associated with solar salt production in the Brazilian semiarid. The study was developed in the area of influence of a solar saltwork, in the Conchas’ river estuary, RN, where the quality of the water in the estuary was monitored for the non-productive and productive periods of the saltwork for 3 years. Thus, a collection site was established immediately in front of the saltwork discharge channel, and samples were collected monthly, at 30 cm depth, always during high tides, totaling 36 samples. For this, the following parameters were evaluated: salinity, pH, calcium, magnesium, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a and rainfall. Salinity was measured in the field with the aid of a portable refractometer. During the operational phase, the average salinity remained above 30.00, characterizing the environment as saline. The calcium and magnesium ions showed an average concentration of 440.00 mg/L and 1280.00 mg/L respectively, values that were according to the limits historically observed for a saline estuary in the analyzed region. The pH and dissolved oxygen were not influenced by the production period (7.93 and above 6.00mg/ L, respectively), while the concentration of chlorophyll a characterized the area as oligotrophic. The functioning of the analyzed solar saltwork did not cause significant changes in the water quality parameters of the estuary.

RESUMO: A extração de sal marinho depende da ocupação de grandes áreas às margens de estuários, muitas delas inseridas em Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APPs). Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade econômica da Compensação Ambiental (CA) como alternativa à desocupação de APP pelas salinas. Para tanto, 27 salinas instaladas na região da Costa Branca brasileira foram avaliadas quanto à ocupação de APPs - mensuradas por meio de imagens de satélites, georreferenciadas, vetorizadas com a geração de bandas de APP - e estimados a CA (Grau de Impacto x Somatório dos investimentos necessários para implantação do empreendimento) e o Impacto Econômico (Valor Presente Líquido, com taxa de juros de longo prazo de 7%) da desocupação das APPs. A CA foi considerada viável quando seus custos resultantes foram menor do que o impacto econômico causado pela desocupação das APPs. A área produtiva média das salinas ocupa 13,70% de APP. Para todos os empreendimentos avaliados, o valor correspondente a CA foi menor que o Impacto Econômico resultante da desocupação das APP. Assim, a CA é uma alternativa economicamente viável e mais atrativa frente à desocupação das APP pela indústria salineira, podendo ainda propiciar ganhos ambientais em decorrência do financiamento de Unidades de Conservação nas áreas de influência dos empreendimentos. Evidencia-se, contudo, a necessidade do aprimoramento da metodologia usada para estimar a CA, já que fixado um limite máximo, os impactos ambientais provocados pelos empreendimentos são subestimados.

ABSTRACT: The extraction of sea salt depends on the occupation of large areas at the estuary banks, many of them inserted in Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs). Thus, the objective was to evaluate the economic viability of Environmental Offsets (EO) as an alternative to the unoccupied PPAs in the saltworks. In order to do so, 27 solar saltworks installed in the region of the Brazilian White Coast were evaluated for the occupation of PPAs - measured using images from satellite, georeferenced, vectored with corresponding PPA bands generated - and estimated to EO (Impact Degree x Sum of the investments necessary to implement the project) and Economic Impact (Net Present Value, with long-term interest rate of 7%) of vacating PPAs. It was considered that EO was feasible whenever the costs resulting from it were lower than the economic impact caused by the vacancy of the PPAs. The PPAs were tthe productive area of the saltworksthat occupied 13.70% of PPAs. For all the evaluated enterprises the value corresponding to EO was lower than the Economic Impact resulting from the vacancy of the PPAs. Thus, EO is an economically viable and more attractive alternative to the eviction of PPAs by the saltworks industry and may also provide environmental gains due to the financing of conservation units in the areas of influence of the enterprises. However, there is a need to improve the methodology used to estimate the EO, since a maximum limit is set, the environmental impacts caused by the projects are underestimated.

RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever uma coorte de doentes com insuficiência hepática aguda, e analisar os fatores demográficos e clínicos associados à mortalidade. Métodos: Estudo de coorte retrospectivo em que todos os pacientes admitidos por insuficiência hepática aguda foram incluídos no período de 28 de julho de 2012 a 31 de agosto de 2017. Dados clínicos e demográficos foram coletados via Sistema Epimed. Foram mensurados SAPS 3, SOFA e MELD. Estimaram-se as OR e seus IC95%. Foram obtidas as curvas Características de Operação do Receptor para os escores de prognóstico, assim como a curva Kaplan-Meier de sobrevida para o escore com melhor predição de mortalidade. Resultados: A maioria dos 40 doentes era do sexo feminino (77,5%), e a etiologia mais frequente foi hepatite pelo vírus B (n = 13). Apenas 35% dos doentes foram submetidos ao transplante hepático. A mortalidade hospitalar foi de 57,5% (IC95%: 41,5 - 73,5). Dentre os escores investigados, apenas o SOFA se manteve associado ao risco de morte (OR = 1,37; IC95% 1,11 - 1,69; p < 0,001). Após a estratificação do SOFA em < 12 e ≥ 12 pontos, a sobrevida foi maior nos pacientes com SOFA < 12 (Log-rank p < 0,001). Conclusão: SOFA nas primeiras 24 horas foi o maior preditor de desfecho fatal.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe a cohort of patients with acute liver failure and to analyze the demographic and clinical factors associated with mortality. Methods: Retrospective cohort study in which all patients admitted for acute liver failure from July 28, 2012, to August 31, 2017, were included. Clinical and demographic data were collected using the Epimed System. The SAPS 3, SOFA, and MELD scores were measured. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Receiver operating characteristics curves were obtained for the prognostic scores, along with the Kaplan-Meier survival curve for the score best predicting mortality. Results: The majority of the 40 patients were female (77.5%), and the most frequent etiology was hepatitis B (n = 13). Only 35% of the patients underwent liver transplantation. The in-hospital mortality rate was 57.5% (95%CI: 41.5 - 73.5). Among the scores investigated, only SOFA remained associated with risk of death (OR = 1.37; 95%CI 1.11 - 1.69; p < 0.001). After SOFA stratification into < 12 and ≥ 12 points, survival was higher in patients with SOFA <12 (log-rank p < 0.001). Conclusion: SOFA score in the first 24 hours was the best predictor of fatal outcome.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a eficácia do ácido tranexâmico na redução da perda sanguínea em artroplastia total de joelho com relação à literatura existente. Método: O presente artigo é uma revisão da literatura a respeito da utilização do ácido tranexâmico nas artroplastias de joelho. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados do Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar e Lilacs com os descritores: “knee arthroplasty”, “tranexamic acid”, and “efficacy”, ao longo de 20 anos. Foram aceitos apenas ensaios clínicos randomizados, publicados entre o período de 2000 e 2016, nos idiomas inglês, espanhol e português. Somente os ensaios graduados acima de três pela escala de Jadad foram selecionados. Resultados: No total, sete ensaios clínicos randomizados satisfizeram os critérios de inclusão, com uma amostra de 948 pacientes. Conclusão: O uso do ácido tranexâmico na artroplastia total do joelho, tanto uni quanto bilateral, reduz a perda de sangue no peri e no pós-operatório em comparação com outros antifibrinolíticos usados. Com a redução da perda total de sangue e da necessidade de transfusões sanguíneas, sem qualquer aumento dos efeitos colaterais, a utilização do uso do ácido tranexâmico pode ser considerada segura e eficaz no controle do sangramento depois de artroplastias do joelho. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of tranexamic acid in reducing blood loss in total knee arthroplasty by examining the existing literature. Method: This literature review investigated the use of tranexamic acid in knee arthroplasty. The search was performed in the Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Lilacs databases over a 20-year period using the keywords: “knee arthroplasty, tranexamic acid, and efficacy”. Only randomized clinical trials published between 2000 and 2016 in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were accepted, and only trials which scored above 3 on the Jadad scale were selected. Results: A total of 7 randomized clinical trials met the inclusion criteria, with a sample of 948 patients. Conclusion: The use of tranexamic acid in total knee arthroplasty (unilateral or bilateral) reduces perioperative and postoperative blood loss more than other available antifibrinolytics. With this reduction in total blood loss and the need for blood transfusions without any increase in side effects, the use of tranexamic acid can be considered safe and effective in controlling bleeding after knee arthroplasties. Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare three and faster sample evaluation, hence adding value to the microscopy tests. Mangroves, because they have high productivity, become attractive places for housing and the development of human activities, such as shrimp farming. However, this activity has generated major environmental impacts. Considering the importance and expressive fragility of mangroves, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a marine shrimp production unit in the mangrove forest of the Rio das Conchas, Porto do Mangue, Rio Grande do Norte. The extent of the affected area was determined by means of remote sensing. Two scenes obtained by the LANDSAT 7 satellite, each composed of three spectral bands, were used. The scenes are representative of the years 1999 and 2003, which comprise, respectively, the previous period and after the installation of the shrimp farm. An on-site evaluation was also carried out to find traces that could be related to degradation, especially signs of soil degradation. According to the evaluation of the area occupied by mangrove vegetation by means of the remote sensing technique, a loss of 25 hectares of mangrove vegetation was verified between the periods of 1999 (prior to the installation of the project) and 2007 (year in which the tax assessment notice was drawn). This reduction reflects the implantation of the shrimp farming activity, associated to the discharge of effluents, originated from the same, as well as poor planning for the development of the activity in the place.

Resumo Os manguezais por apresentarem elevada produtividade, tornam-se locais atrativos para habitação e desenvolvimento de atividades humanas, como a carcinicultura. No entanto, essa atividade tem gerado grandes impactos ambientais. Assim, considerando a importância e a expressiva fragilidade dos manguezais, objetivou-se avaliar o impacto de uma unidade de produção de camarão marinho na floresta de mangue do rio das conchas, Porto do Mangue, Rio Grande do Norte. A extensão da área afetada foi determinada por meio de sensoriamento remoto. Foram utilizadas duas cenas obtidas pelo satélite LANDSAT 7, representativas dos anos de 1999 e 2003, que compreendem, respectivamente, o período anterior e após a instalação da fazenda de camarão. Realizou-se também uma avaliação in loco, buscando encontrar vestígios que pudessem estar relacionados à degradação, em especial indícios de degradação do solo. Conforme a avaliação da área ocupada por vegetação de mangue por meio da técnica de sensoriamento remoto, constatou-se uma perda de 25 hectares de área ocupada por vegetação de mangue, entre os períodos de 1999 (anterior à instalação do empreendimento) e 2007 (ano em que o auto de infração foi lavrado). Essa redução é reflexo da implantação da atividade de carcinicultura, associado ao descarte de efluentes da mesma, bem como, mau planejamento para o desenvolvimento da atividade no local.

RESUMO A insuficiência hepática aguda é uma síndrome rara com elevada mortalidade e frequentemente reconhecida de forma tardia. Os médicos intensivistas desempenham um papel fundamental na suspeição diagnóstica e no manejo das disfunções múltiplo-orgânicas características desta entidade. A síndrome inflamatória de reconstituição imune é uma entidade que se caracteriza pela piora paradoxal do quadro prévio do paciente, após o início de antirretrovirais, desencadeada contra patógenos presentes no hospedeiro ou autoantígenos. A hepatite autoimune tem sido recentemente descrita como uma destas manifestações autoimunes. Os autores relatam o primeiro caso com evolução à insuficiência hepática aguda e óbito em poucos dias após o desenvolvimento de encefalopatia, revisam os casos de hepatite autoimune descritos e tecem comentários sobre as possibilidades terapêuticas neste contexto.

ABSTRACT Acute liver failure is a rare syndrome with high mortality and is often diagnosed late. Intensivist physicians play fundamental roles in the diagnostic suspicion and the management of the multiple-organic dysfunctions characteristic of this entity. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome is an entity that is characterized by the paradoxical worsening of the patient's previous condition, after the initiation of antiretrovirals, triggered against either pathogens present in the host or autoantigens. Autoimmune hepatitis has recently been described as one of these autoimmune manifestations. The authors report the first case with evolution to acute liver failure and death within a few days after the development of encephalopathy, review the cases of autoimmune hepatitis described and comment on the therapeutic possibilities in this context.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a realização da infiltração de solução de agentes analgésicos periarticulares no intraoperatório da artroplastia total do joelho (ATJ), no que tange aos seus benefícios, redução da dor, consumo de opioides, melhora do arco de movimento e deambulação precoce. Métodos: Para avaliar os benefícios da infiltração de agentes periarticulares, foram analisados pacientes submetidos à ATJ, sendo separados em dois grupos. Um grupo recebeu o protocolo de infiltração periarticular local, contendo solução de bupivacaína a 0,5% (400 mg /20 ml), epinefrina 1/1000 (0,3 ml), hexacetonido de triancinolona (20 mg/1 ml), clonidina (150 mcg/1 ml) e 20 ml de solução salina (SF a 0,9%) e outro grupo recebeu analgesia endovenosa convencional. Os resultados foram comparados e as variáveis analisadas foram idade, sexo, IMC, comorbidades, complicações pós-cirúrgicas, dor, capacidade funcional, amplitude de movimento, transfusão e resgate de opioides para analgesia. Resultados: Dos pacientes analisados a média de idade foi de 68 anos e a maioria era do sexo feminino e com acometimento do joelho esquerdo. No pós-operatório os pacientes que haviam recebido infiltração periarticular apresentaram melhora da dor, bem como da capacidade funcional. Conclusão: A análise dos dados obtidos demonstrou que a infiltração periarticular de agentes analgésicos é significativamente eficaz para o controle da dor e recuperação funcional. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the use of infiltration of periarticular analgesic agents intraoperatively in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with regard to benefits, reduction of pain, opioid consumption, improvement of range of motion and early ambulation. Methods: To analyze the benefits of periarticular drug infiltration, the patients submitted to TKA were evaluated, being separated into two groups. One group received the local periarticular infiltration protocol containing 0.5% bupivacaine (400mg/20ml), 1/1000 epinephrine (0.3ml), triamcinolone hexacetonide (20mg/1ml), clonidine (150mcg/1ml) and 20 ml of saline (0.9% SS) and, the other group underwent conventional intravenous analgesia. The results were compared and the variables analyzed were age, sex, BMI, comorbidities, postoperative complications, pain, functional capacity, range of motion, transfusion and rescue opioids for analgesia. Results: The mean age of the patients was 68 years and most were female and presented involvement of the left knee. Postoperatively, patients who had received periarticular infiltration showed improvement of pain as well as functional capacity. Conclusion: The analysis of data obtained demonstrated that the periarticular infiltration of analgesic agents is significantly effective for pain control and functional recovery. RESUMO O transplante de órgãos é a única alternativa para muitos pacientes portadores de algumas doenças terminais. Ao mesmo tempo, é preocupante a crescente desproporção entre a alta demanda por transplantes de órgãos e o baixo índice de transplantes efetivados. Dentre as diferentes causas que alimentam essa desproporção, estão os equívocos na identificação do potencial doador de órgãos e as contraindicações mal atribuídas pela equipe assistente. Assim, o presente documento pretende fornecer subsídios à equipe multiprofissional da terapia intensiva para o reconhecimento, a avaliação e a validação do potencial doador de órgãos.

ABSTRACT Organ transplantation is the only alternative for many patients with terminal diseases. The increasing disproportion between the high demand for organ transplants and the low rate of transplants actually performed is worrisome. Some of the causes of this disproportion are errors in the identification of potential organ donors and in the determination of contraindications by the attending staff. Therefore, the aim of the present document is to provide guidelines for intensive care multi-professional staffs for the recognition, assessment and acceptance of potential organ donors.

A morte encefálica induz várias alterações fisiopatológicas que podem causar lesões em rins, pulmões, coração e fígado. Portanto, a atuação do intensivista durante a manutenção do potencial doador falecido exige cuidados específicos com estes órgãos visando sua maior viabilidade para transplantes. O manejo hemodinâmico cuidadoso, os cuidados ventilatórios e de higiene brônquica minimizam a perda de rins e pulmões para o transplante. A avaliação da condição morfológica e funcional do coração auxilia na avaliação do potencial transplantável deste órgão. Por fim, a avaliação da função hepática, assim como o controle metabólico e a realização de sorologias virais são fundamentais para a orientação das equipes transplantadoras na seleção do órgão a ser doado e no cuidado com o receptor.

Brain death (BD) alters the pathophysiology of patients and may damage the kidneys, the lungs, the heart and the liver. To obtain better quality transplant organs, intensive care physicians in charge of the maintenance of deceased donors should attentively monitor these organs. Careful hemodynamic, ventilatory and bronchial clearance management minimizes the loss of kidneys and lungs. The evaluation of cardiac function and morphology supports the transplant viability assessment of the heart. The monitoring of liver function, the management of the patient's metabolic status and the evaluation of viral serology are fundamental for organ selection by the transplant teams and for the care of the transplant recipient

O presente trabalho insere-se no Projecto intitulado Percursos do associativismo e do sindicalismo docentes em Portugal - 1890-1990,cujo financiamento principiou em 1 de Janeiro de 2010, pela FCT e de que o signatário é investigador responsável. O seu objectivo é contribuir para o estudo do tema geral supracitado, nas suas formas históricas: a sua motivação imediata é a análise do conflito que, nos finais da década de 60, opôs os docentes do Ciclo Preparatório do Ensino Secundário às autoridades educacionais devido à despromoção profissional de que foram vítimas relativamente aos demais sectores do professorado do Ensino Secundário. Em anexo, o estudo recolhe documentação inédita e matéria jornalística até agora esquecida.

This work is part of the main project The development of teachers’ associative movements and unionism in Portugal, 1890-1990 - whose ﬁnancement began in January 1st, 2010, by the FCT and that the signer is the responsible investigator.The purpose is to contribute to the study of the general topic above, in its historical forms.Their immediate motivation is the analysis of conﬂict in the late 60’s, opposed the teachers in the preparatory cycle of secondary school education authorities due to the demotion of professional, who have suffered in relation to other sectors of the teaching staff of Secondary Education.Attached we can ﬁnd the study collects of unpublished documentation and press releases so far overlooked.

O presente estudo pretende reconstituir a vida de António Sérgio nas grandes linhas da sua biografia, relacionando as suas actividades profissionais, políticas e pedagógicas ao longo dos seus oitenta e seis anos de vida.Trata-se de um primeiro escorço biográfico do grande escritor racionalista de ideias, nos contrastes das suas contradições. Sérgio foi uma personalidade complexa, cuja vida acidentada e por vezes amarga não aparece directamente reflectida nos seus escritos ensaísticos. É preciso pelo contrário procurar o seu perfil noutras fontes, entre as quais, sobretudo, as epistolográficas que, felizmente, se acham largamente impressas.

The present essay aims at rebuilding the life of António Sérgio within the great lines of his biography, relating his professional, political and pedagogical activities along his eighty-six years of life. It is a first biografical summary of the great rationalist writer of ideas, in the contrasts of his own contradictions. Sérgio was a complex personality, whose misfortunate life, sometimes painful, isn’t directly reflected in his essays. It is necessary, on the contrary, to look for his profile in other sources, mainly the epistolographic, which are fortunately largely printed.

Objetivo: examinar se a taxa de eritroblastos, no sangue da veia umbilical de recém-nascidos, tem relação com a hipoxia perinatal, analisada pelos parâmetros que expressam o equilíbrio ácido-básico (EAB) do sangue funicular. Métodos: de recém-nascidos vivos com pelo menos 37 semanas de gestação, assistidos no Hospital de Alvorada-RS, foram coletadas amostras de sangue da veia umbilical antes da instalação da respiração. Parte do sangue foi coletado em frasco contendo EDTA, determinando-se as séries vermelha e branca. No sangue coletado em seringa com heparina, foram determinados valores do pH, pO2, pCO2 e calculado o EAB. Em lâmina corada pelo corante panótico, procedeu-se à contagem manual do número de eritroblastos. A taxa de eritroblastos foi calculada em relação ao número de leucócitos. Resultados: dos 158 casos que compõem o estudo, em 55 as condições perinatais permitiram considerá-los como isentos de acometimento de processo hipóxico. A média da taxa de eritroblastos foi 3,9%, com o desvio-padrão de 2,8%. Os valores mínimo e máximo foram 0% e 10%, respectivamente. Dentre os 158 casos, a taxa dos eritroblastos foi 5,7%, com desvio-padrão de 5,3%. Os valores mínimo e máximo foram 0% e 28%, respectivamente. A aplicação do teste de Pearson a taxa dos eritroblastos e valores dos parâmetros do EAB mostrou correlação significativa para o pH e pCO2. A elaboração da curva ROC revelou que 5% de eritroblastos e pH de 7,25 representam pontos de corte que contrabalançam a sensibilidade e especificidade (54% e 56%), respectivamente. Dos 23 conceptos com taxa de eritroblastos maior que 10%, 7 (30,4%) estavam acidóticos, 11 (48,7%) eram grandes para a idade gestacional, 3 (13%) eram pequenos para a idade gestacional, 7 (30,4%) tinham anemia e em 3 (13%) não foram constatadas anormalidades. Conclusões: em recém-nascidos de gestações e partos sem complicações, a taxa de eritroblastos ao nascimento foi menor do que 10%. Quando a taxa de eritroblastos foi maior do que 10% houve correlação principalmente com acidemia, distúrbios do crescimento intra-uterino e anemia fetal.

Purpose: nucleated red blood cell counts are increased in several hypoxic conditions. The authors aimed to establish if there is a correlation between erythroblast counts in the umbilical vein of newborns and the presence of perinatal hypoxia detected by acid-base balance parameters. Methods: blood samples were obtained from the umbilical vein of pregnant subjects with at least 37 weeks of gestation attended at the Hospital de Alvorada-RS, just before the newborns' first breathing movement. Part of the blood was placed in an EDTA-containing vial and white and red blood cells were analyzed. The remaining amount of blood was aspirated into insulin type syringe previously washed with heparin and pH, pO2, pCO2 and acid-base excess/deficit were analyzed. Slides were also prepared with the panoptic stain for visual identification and count of the erythroblast number. The erythroblast/leukocyte ratio was calculated. Results: of the 158 cases included in the study, 55 were considered free of perinatal hypoxia. In this population, the average erythroblast rate was 3.9% with a standard deviation of 2.8%. The minimum and maximum values were 0% and 10%, respectively. When considering all the cases, the average was 5.7%, with a standard deviation of 5.3%. The minimum and maximum values were 0% and 28%, respectively. Application of Pearson's test for the analysis of the erythroblast rate and acid-base parameters showed a significant correlation for pH and pCO2. The construction of a Receiver Operation Curve showed that for an erythroblast rate of 5%, a 7.25-pH cutoff yields a sensitivity of 54% and a specificity of 56%. Out of the 23 newborns whose normoblast rate was greater than 10%, there was acidemia in 7 (30.4%), 11 (48.7%) were large for gestational age, 3 (13%) were small for gestational age, 7 (30.4%) were anemic, and in 3 (13%) there were no abnormalities. Conclusions: in newborns from uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries, the erythroblast rate was less than 10%. When it was greater than 10%, a correlation was found mainly with large or small for gestational age, fetal anemia and acidemia.

Este estudo sobre os primeiros anos de atividades da Sociedade das Casas de Asilo da Infância Desvalida firmou-se na exploração do arquivo da instituição, denominada desde há poucos anos Fundação D. Pedro IV. Ela orientou-se pela filantropia, seguindo as tendências manifestadas pelas classes hegemônicas européias, sobretudo em França, tendo à sua frente o ex-Imperador do Brasil, que regressou a Lisboa após a derrota dos absolutistas. As Casas de Asilo tinham uma fisionomia própria que se distinguia das salles d'asile. No intuito de acharem um rumo ajustado às necessidades da sociedade portuguesa, os animadores da iniciativa começaram por criar uma "escola de ensino". Colhidos os primeiros frutos da experiência, o movimento das Casas de Asilo começou a difundir-se pelo país e a diversificar as suas intervenções. Embora destinadas a um público de crianças provenientes de famílias muito pobres ou indigentes, em idade pré-escolar, essas instituições configuravam as escolas de Primeiras Letras, mas incluíam no currículo atividades educativas, manuais ou artísticas, e de educação social, visando à integração de seu público. Apesar disso, essa experiência de educação infantil não logrou desprender-se da tradição escolarizante que a marcava.

This study on the first years of activity of the Society of Homes for Disabled Children bases itself in the exploration of the archives of the institution, recently renamed the Foundation D. Pedro IV. It was oriented by philanthropy, following the tendencies manifested by the hegemonic European classes especially in France and headed by the ex-Emperor of Brazil who had returned to Lisbon after the defeat of the Absolutists. The Homes for Disabled Children had their own physiognomy, different from the salles d'asile. Aiming to set a course consonant with the needs of Portuguese society, the promoters of the initiative started by creating a "school for teaching". Harvesting the first fruits of the experience, the Homes for Disabled Children movement began to spread throughout the country and diversify its interventions. Although intended for children of pre school age from poor or indigent families, these institutions became schools for learning first literacy, they also included manual and artistic educational activities in their curriculum as well as social education aimed at integrating their public. Despite this, the experience of early childhood education did not manage to disengage from the teaching tradition that characterized it.

Ao destacar o caráter polissémico da palavra criança, o artigo questiona tal polissemia para tempos pretéritos. Afirma que o vocábulo foi muitas vezes substituído por outros, com o intuito de designar com mais propriedade as fases de desenvolvimento infantil e problematiza com isto o estudo clássico de Philippe Ariès acerca do sentimento de infância na Idade Média. As análises partem de uma releitura da Crónica de D. João I, de Fernão Lopes e rastrea no texto do cronista as palavras usadas para significar criança na acepção que hoje se dá ao termo. O propósito foi o de efetuar sondagem em uma das obras desse grande criador da língua portuguesa no período considerado. A essa fonte acrescentam-se algumas páginas da literatura que focaliza a criança em diferentes situações, cuja análise permitiu reconstruir as diversas representações de crianças, as quais, por sua vez, depõem sobre traços significativos da mentalidade pedagógica, em Portugal, quanto ao modo de conceber a infância. Conclui pela necessidade de compreender o termo infância em seu plural, pois assinala a variedade de perfis que essa categoria histórica, social e psicológica comporta; e alerta para o facto de que é preciso recordar que os retratos de crianças não provêm diretamente de crianças, mas foram produzidos por aqueles que já não eram meninos.

By highlighting the polysemic character of the word ‘child’, this paper questions such polysemy in past times. The paper asserts that the word ‘child’ has many times been substituted by others with the purpose of designating more properly the phases of the child development. By doing that, the classic study by Philippe Ariès about the feeling of childhood during the Middle Age is questioned. The analyses start from a re-reading of the Chronicle of D. João I, by Fernão Lopes, and it traces in the author’s text the words used to denote ‘child’ in its current meaning. The paper’s objective was to investigate one of the works of this great author of the Portuguese language in the period studied. Besides Lopes’ work, some other pages of the literature that present the child in different situations were also examined. The analyses allowed the reconstruction of various representations of children that revealed significant facets of the Portuguese pedagogical thinking as regards ways of conceiving the childhood. The paper concludes by arguing for the need of a plural understanding of the term childhood. The plurality would signal to various profiles that this historical, social and psychological category allows. The study also calls attention to the fact that the portraits of children have not come directly from the children themselves but they have been made by those that were no longer children.
